Double Scoop Matching Game
It's July and it's hot! Kids are running through the sprinklers, we're making lemonade like nobody's business, and ice cream trucks are cruising the neighborhoods.
Wait! Did someone mention ice cream?! Oooh … the perfect summer treat, right? There are times when kids need some down time and a relaxing, cool game is just the ticket.
This is a matching game geared towards preschoolers where one person creates an ice cream cone and the other one replicates it on their own card. It's fun for Mom or Grandma to play with a little one, but it's also a game that older siblings can enjoy with younger ones during the dog days of summer when a little quiet time is called for.
I was looking for papers that looked like an ice cream parlor or ice cream flavors so I started by choosing eight different papers from Jenni Bowlin's kits: Bright Travels, Sunny Skies, The Boardwalk, and Modern Mercantile, and printed them on my home printer.
I have a Silhouette machine for cutting shapes so I picked up Design #1330 for my ice cream cone. It's a double scoop in a cone with a cherry. Yum!
Because this is a matching game, I needed one card for each player and it needed the outline of the cone on it. I cut the ice cream scoops and cones, then layered them on a piece of cardstock to trace and create a template. This could've been done by tracing and cutting with the Silhouette, but I'm a novice with the Silhouette and thought of the possibility after the fact!
I then traced the ice cream cone onto printed paper. I had printed on 8.5 x 11 so I cut those in half to get 8.5 x 5.5 sized cards.
I printed four papers so had eight cards. You can print as many as you want depending on how many children you are entertaining!
Kids LOVE ice cream so be sure to cut plenty of scoops. They might want to make a double scoop, but they might go outside the box and make a triple! Ya just never know.
And cherries to go on top! Don't forget those … they are so necessary.
Now that you have all your components, I would recommend laminating them before turning the kids loose with them. I would also recommend adding velcro to the cards and to the pieces. It will add a tactile element to the learning process as well as keep everything in place on the cards as the kids are trying to match.
You could play one card at a time, or you could set up several cards to keep the Little One busy for a little longer.
Have fun!
